HISTORY OF DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) is without a doubt the most widely recognized dance type game to date. DDR is part of Konami's Bemani (sound simulation) series. Often imitated, never duplicated, DDR spawned a new line of arcade gaming, where foot-eye coordination was needed in order to play. First introduced in 1998, DDR has been through many different facelifts since 0.5 was floating around Japan. The latest arcade release of DDR is called DDR: Extreme. Extreme (also known as 8th mix) first debuted in Japan as a beta test machine in October 2002. The official release date for Extreme was December 25th, 2002. Within mere HOURS of this release, DDR Extreme units were being sold and shipped to arcades in the United States, Canada, and all around the world. Our local arcade was fortunate to be one of the first in the US to receive one of these units. Up until now, I never really saw a need for an FAQ for this game... however, things always do change. I intend to try and make this the MOST complete DDR Extreme FAQ to date. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ II. LET'S DDR! HOW TO PLAY While watching the machine scroll through the Demo mode, it occasionally shows how to play. However, all subtexts are in Japanese, so it makes it somewhat difficult to understand what they are trying to say. Here's the basics of how to play. You stand on the playfield (called the dance pad). If you are standing with both feet in the center, this is how it will look: There are four arrows on the dancepad: one in front of you (UP), one behind you (DOWN), one to your left (LEFT), and one to your right (RIGHT) (for anyone who is not familiar with the arcade unit, look at the numeric keypad on your keyboard. The arrows are in the 2, 4, 6, and 8 positions). On the screen (in gameplay, or you can follow in demo mode to get the idea before playing) you can see four gray outlines of arrows at the top. These arrows correspond to the four arrows on the dancepad. Underneath those arrows, there will be arrows that move up toward those stationary arrows (castings). When the moving arrows line up with the castings, you step on the corresponding arrow on the dancepad. If two arrows appear at the same time, you step on both at the same time (called a jump). If you misstep repeatedly, your life gauge (at the top of the screen) will decrease until you hit enough steps correctly to bring it back up, or until the game is over. Your score is determined by your accuracy of hitting the steps. Now then... let's get ready for our first game, shall we? Insert the correct number of credits/tokens/quarters for your machine. You will know when the correct number has been put in when the screen changes to a green-background screen, and the announcer says "DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!". If left on this screen, the announcer will repeat occasionally "LET'S DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION!". Stand on the pad and press the green 1P start button to begin your 1P game. The machine will then make a noise and go to a warning screen (which is in Japanese) and the announcer will say "LET'S DDR!" The warning screen basically says to be careful and conscious of your surroundings when playing (or, if playing Megamix, DON'T FALL OFF!!!). This brings us to the next section... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ III. SELECT A STYLE: Game modes So, we've got the basic concept of the game, and we're starting our first game. Time to start by selecting a style. Assuming you're following the FAQ to this point, you should be on the 1P pad and the Warning screen should have just disappeared. You should now see the Select Style screen. This screen shows the three different styles of play: Single, Versus, and Double. Single: 4 arrows, one side of the machine, one person plays alone. During single mode, a second player CANNOT join in. Versus: 2 players, one on each side of the machine, both play 4-arrow play Double: 8 arrows, one player uses both sides of the machine to play In some arcades, there is an option that is turned on called "Joint Premium". This option allows for a second player to join in to the game for free. If your machine is set on Joint Premium, you will be able to tell at this screen: the announcer will say "NO CHARGE TO JOIN IN!" and there will be a small graphic in the bottom left hand corner of the screen saying Joint Premium On. To start the 2P side, simply press the 2P start button (which should be flashing) at this time. If you machine does NOT have Joint Premium turned on, then in order to play Versus or Doubles mode, you have to insert another credit on the machine. To select between these options, use the yellow Select buttons to choose your Style and then press the green Start button when you are satisfied with your choice. Sine we're wanting 1P, just press the green Start button again. ***NOTE for advanced players: If your machine has memory card slots, you must insert your memory card BEFORE you choose a style. After choosing a Style, it will then access your card and read the data on it.*** The next screen that comes up has the announcer saying "SELECT DIFFICULTY!". There are four different visible difficulties available on the main screen: Beginner, Light, Standard, and Heavy. They are in order from left to right from easiest to hardest. Select the difficulty that you wish to play on... BUT WAIT! There's more. If you press Right Select until you get to Heavy, then press Right Select again, the screen will move over to a hidden screen showing two more options (the announcer applauds your discovery by saying "THIS MODE IS DIFFICULT"): Nonstop and Challenge. These options will be explained in their own sections later in this FAQ. If you press Left Select from these options, it will take you back to the default Difficulty Select screen. Made your difficulty selection? All right! Let's move on to... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ IV. SELECT MUSIC: Choosing a song This is where the fun starts. First things first, in the upper right hand corner of the screen is a timer. It starts by default at 90. If this timer runs out, you will automatically choose the song that the cursor is set on. However, 90 seconds is more than enough time to choose a song. The majority of the right side of the screen is taken up by the Song Select wheel. The song at the center with a frame around it (if nothing has been touched, this should be Graduation) is the currently selected song. You will hear a preview of the song playing on the speakers. Scroll between the different songs on the list by using the Left Select and Right Select buttons. At the top of the screen, there is a long horizontal green bar. At the left side, it says 1P. This is where the modifiers for Player 1 are listed. Modifiers will be explained later in the FAQ. Toward the top left of the screen, under the mod bar, is the song banner for the currently selected song. In the upper right hand corner of that banner is a spinning icon that shows what genre the song is from. Above the banner from left to right, the following info is listed: Stage number, current song BPM (beats per minute, higher is faster), sort mode. To change the sort mode, press both the Select buttons at the same time. There are multiple different sort modes: Default: shows a choice collection of songs, but only a small amount of what is offered on Extreme. Genre: Songs are sorted by the different games that they come from: DDR 1st-8th mix, Solo, Club, Home, Dance Maniax, Beatmania, IIDX, The Final, PopnMusic, Mambo a Go Go, Para Para Paradise, Keyboard Mania, and Guitar Freaks/Drum Mania. Alpha: Songs are sorted alphabetically. BPM: Songs are in one large list, sorted by BPM. Slowest: Be In My Paradise, 63 BPM. Fastest: Legend of Max, ??? (666 max) BPM. Best: Shows the top 30 played songs on the machine. There is a flashing 1, 2, and 3 next to the top 3 played songs. Under that banner is the Groove Radar. The Groove Radar (introduced in DDRMAX: 6th mix) shows the overall difficulty of a song plotted on a graph. There are 5 different attributes to the Groove Radar: Air: Shows how many jumps are in a song Stream: Shows how long and how often an organized flow of arrows appears in a song Chaos: same as Stream, only with disorganized random arrows Freeze: Shows how many freeze arrows are in a song Voltage: The peak of a song, showing the most arrows onscreen at one time. Speed and chaos factor into this rating. Using the Groove Radar, you can get a general idea of what kind of song you will be playing. Under the Groove Radar, you'll see a display with a number and a corresponding number of feet next to it. The color of the feet reflect the difficulty you are on: Light blue: Beginner Yellow: Light Pink: Standard Green: Heavy Dark blue/purple: Challenge The lowest number of feet is 1, while the highest is 10 (though technically there are 10s, then there are a few that have flashing 10 foot ratings!!!). Difficulty is based on many different aspects of a song, mainly what is displayed on the Groove Radar. When in the Default sort mode, there are two additional options in the song select list: Random and Roulette. Random will automatically choose a song for you, whereas Roulette will spin the Song Select wheel until you hit the Start button to stop it, where it will "lock on" a song. You will not be able to change your song selection. Remember that note that talked about memory cards earlier? Well, if you've got a PS1 memory card that is formatted for use with DDR Extreme, then you will see some extra things onscreen. First, next to each song, there is a small area with the current highest attained grade for the song. Above (or below for 2P) the song name, there is a narrow bar that shows the score that was attained on the song. If you have Edit data saved for a song, on the left side of the song there will be an icon denoting this. To load your Edit data, press the Right arrow on the pad twice. The songlist will change to a list including the Official steps and any edits you have made. If you enter the Load Edit Data screen for a song that does not have Edit data, you will only see the Official Steps for that song. To exit the Load Edit Data screen and return to normal song selection, press the Left arrow on the pad twice. Once you find the song you want to play, it comes time to choose... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ V. SELECT OPTIONS: Choosing Modifiers There's two ways of choosing modifiers for your song. The first is inputting foot codes on the pad while still on the Song Select screen. Almost all modifiers can be input while on the Song Select screen by using the foot codes. Next to each modifier, there is a listing of the arrows that you must press to change the difficulty. Option two, the easy way: When choosing your song, if you hold down the Start button, you will go to the Options screen. This screen will allow you to change song modifiers: Speed: 1x 1.5x 2x 3x 5x 8x (cannot be changed by foot codes) Speed modifiers change the speed that the displayed arrows scroll on the screen. The song itself is still the same speed, but the arrows just move faster. Useful for slower songs, to space the arrows out a little bit. Boost: On Off (LRDU) Boost is a special modifier that accelerates the arrows as they travel up the screen. They start as a little bit slower speed at the bottom, then accelerate as they approach the top. Appearance: Visible Hidden Sudden Stealth (LUR) Visible: Arrows appear normally and are completely visible on the screen. Hidden: The arrows appear normally at the bottom of the screen, then disappear at about halfway up the screen. Sudden: Opposite of Hidden. Arrows do not appear until about 1/2 way up the screen. Stealth: Arrows do not appear on the screen AT ALL. Turn: Off Left Right Mirror Shuffle (Left: UDRL Right: UDLR Mirror: ULRLR Shuffle: UDUDUD) Off: Arrows are in the intended default pattern. Left: Arrows are rotated 90 degrees to the left. Right: Arrows are rotated 90 degrees to the right. Mirror: Arrows are rotated 180 degrees. Shuffle: Think of each arrow in a song as its own stepchart. Now mix those 4 stepcharts around randomly, and you play the result. Makes for many hard patterns, but in some cases, makes songs easier. Not always the same. Other: Off Little Flat Solo Dark (LDR) Off: Leaves stuff as is. Little: Removes all notes from the song except for the 1/4 beat notes (yellow notes). Flat: Makes all notes the same color, so the difference in beat cannot be determined by the color of the arrows. Solo: Makes the arrows brighter and a solid color, so the beat of each arrow can be distinguished by the color. 1/4 note - Yellow. 1/8th note - Blue. 1/16th note - Purple. Dark: Makes the white arrow castings at the top of the screen disappear. Scroll: Standard Reverse (DLRLR) Standard: Arrows scroll from the bottom of the screen to the top Reverse: Arrows scroll from the top of the screen to the bottom. Freeze: On Off (RLDU) On: Leaves freeze arrows in the song. Off: Takes out all the freeze arrows in a song. NOTE: If you use this option, you will NOT be able to attain a grade of AAA on the song, provided that the song does have freeze arrows in it. Step: Beginner Light Standard Heavy Oni (UU to go up, DD to go down) This allows you to choose the difficulty of the song on the Options screen. Oni difficulty is simply another difficulty of steps, sometimes easier, sometimes harder. It is not available for all songs. NOTE: Beginner mode is not available on Doubles play. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VI. READY? LET'S GO! Song List This song list is taken from Aaron's DDR pages at http://www.aaroninjapan.com Songs are listed as they appear on the machine in the Genre sort mode. A future update will add more information about the rest of the songs, including artist, BPM, and a description of the Single Heavy steps. Fornow, all the songs are listed with difficulties in the following order: Single Beginner Light Standard Heavy Oni, Double Light Standard Heavy Oni An X indicates that there are no steps for that difficulty. A question mark (?) indicates that steps exist for that difficulty that are hidden, unlockable using the Oni/Nonstop glitch documented later in the FAQ. From DDR Extreme 1998 - Naoki 150 BPM Single: 1 3 5 7 x Double: 3 5 7 x One of Naoki's new Extreme tracks, the Heavy steps feature a fairly straightforward pattern of 1/8th notes with a smattering of freeze arrows. Very few offbeat steps and 1/16th notes in this song. bag - RevenG 65 BPM Single: 1 4 7 10 x Double: 4 8 10 x RevenG goes the other way on their normal standard for songs and makes an extremely SLOW song for a change. Heavy is one of the best examples of 1/32nd notes and syncopated step patterns. Played on 1x, this song is VERY difficult to attain a high Perfect count on. Played with a speed modifier, the song (to most) loses its rating of a 10 footer. Burnin' The Floor (Momo Mix) - Naoki 170-340BPM Single: 1 4 6 8 x Double: 4 6 8 x A newer faster remix of a Naoki classic that first debuted in 4th mix, this song has a speedup in the beginning of the song that makes it the 2nd fastest song in the game... for one step. A long section of offbeat 1/8th notes in the middle of the song make this song all the more fun. Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix) 170BPM Single: 1 4 7 9 x Double: 4 7 9 x Many people say that this song was mislabeled in difficulty, saying that it should be a 10 foot song. Difficult rhythms at a fast speed, multiple 1/16th note runs (though short), and tricky jump combinations make this song VERY difficult for all but the most experienced players. One of the hardest new 9 foot songs on Extreme. Crash! - Mr. Brian and the Final Band 200BPM Single: 2 4 5 8 x Double: 4 5 8 x Though many are not fans of the song itself, this song is fairly fast, though consisting of only 1/4th and 1/8th notes makes the song somewhat easier than others... if your ears can withstand the torture, that is. :) Dance Dance Revolution - DDR All Stars - 150 (listed as ???) BPM Single: 3 4 7 9 9 Double: 4 7 9 9 This song is featured as the OneMoreExtra Stage on Extreme, allowing the Oni steps to be played before they are unlocked... at 3x, on Reverse, on Sudden Death. The Heavy steps first appeared in the Naoki Premium Oni, and are said to be somewhat easier than the Oni steps. The Oni steps samples different step patterns from other Heavy songs in this order: Brilliant2U Orchestra Groove, Dead End, Dynamite Rave (the 1/16th jump slide makes a comeback), End of the Century, AM-3P, Celebrate Nite, B4U, and Dance Dance Revolution Heavy. Graduation - BeForU 125BPM Single: 1 2 5 7 x Double: 2 5 7 x The default song when first entering the Song Select screen. This song is a slow, but easy BeForU song. It is said to be slightly offsync. Fairly simple step patterns. Hyper Eurobeat - Naoki feat. DDR All Stars 152BPM Single: 1 3 4 7 x Double: 3 6 8 - Also known as Hyper Earlybeat or Hyper Offbeat (in order to attain many Perfects, one must step slightly early), this song is neither Hyper... nor Eurobeat. Many tricky freeze arrow combinations with 1/8th note turns make this one of the harder Extreme exclusive songs. I Do I Do I Do - Creamy 134BPM Single: 1 2 5 8 x Double: 3 5 8 x A somewhat happy go lucky song, very fun to listen to... can be somewhat unnerving after a while. The steps are fairly straightforward, with a few offbeat sections and a few 16th notes that are tricky. Irresistiblement - Wild Side 166BPM Single: 1 3 6 9 x Double: 3 6 8 x A good fun song that is light on the lyrics, fairly straightforward. Considered to be one of the easiest 9 footers on Extreme. Almost completely composed of 1/8th note runs, with a few short gallop sections. La Copa De La Vida - Patrick Victorio 134BPM Single: 1 3 5 7 x Double: 3 5 7 x Translates to "Cup of Life", this song is an uplifting Latin melody. Made popular in the US by Ricky Martin, most new players play this song constantly. Follows the beat of the song very well, very easy. Love <3 Shine - Kosaka Riyu 177BPM Single: 1 4 4 7 ? Double: 3 4 8 x Another song from a member of BeForU, this song is an uplifting happy tune, that makes me think of people smiling and giggling... or something. The challenge steps have many jumps and odd turns. Heavy has a lot of air, but is mostly 1/8th notes. Memories - Naoki feat. Paula Terry 145BPM Single: 1 3 6 8 x Double: 3 5 8 x This song is a fairly difficult song for an 8 footer. A lot of syncopated patterns, isolated 1/16th notes, and the song overall does not flow very well on your feet. Still a fairly fun song to play. PARANOiA Survivor - 270 135-270BPM Single: 3 5 8 10 x Double: 6 8 10 x PARANOiA Survivor is one of the new 10 foot songs featured on DDR Extreme, and definitely earns its ranking. Boasting multiple slowdowns and a run of 1/8th note turns at 270BPM, this is one of the more challenging songs on Extreme. PARANOiA Survivor Max - 290 145-290BPM Single: 3 5 8 10+ 10+ Double: 6 8 10+ 10+ This is it... the hardest song in the game. The song itself... is completely identical to PARANOiA Survivor, except that it is faster, and has a small section added at the end. The Heavy steps are simply the Heavy steps to PARANOiA Survivor on Mirror, with a small added section at the end. The Oni steps... 613 steps of pure hell. Fast turns, slowdowns, difficult patterns... this one takes even the most experienced players and turns them into mush. It destroys your stamina and wears you down. Good luck. Senorita (Speedy Mix) - Jenny ROM 174BPM Single: 1 3 6 8 x Double: 3 6 8 x Jenny ROM's latest submission to the DDR series is a fairly entertaining little tune, filled with fairly simple 1/8th note runs and some repeating patterns. Easy song, fun steps, very enjoyable. Speed Over Beethoven - Rose 169BPM Single: 1 3 6 8 x Double: 3 5 9 x An updated remix of Beethoven's Fur Elise, one of the tougher new 8 foot songs on Extreme. Quite a bit of galloping, lots of turns, and a few turning gallops. Throw in some 1/8th note streams, and... that's the song. Fun, but somewhat difficult. Tears - Naoki Underground feat. EK 143BPM Single: 1 5 7 9 x Double: 4 7 9 x A sorrowful sounding song, this song has quite a few harder gallops and pivoting syncopated steps while holding freeze arrows. This song took me forever to improve on, only because it's REALLY tough to do well on. The song itself is a wonderful song, and it is definitely worthy of its 9 foot rating. The Legend of Max - ZZ 62-666 (mainly at 333)BPM Single: 3 6 9 10+ x Double: 6 9 10+ x The Legend of Max is the Extra Stage for DDR Extreme. Fast 1/8th note runs, difficult step patterns, and the traditional midsong slowdown are all present here. This song drains your stamina with a 19 step 333BPM run before throwing a good deal of fast jumps at you. DEFINITELY worthy of its 10+ rating. Trip Machine Survivor - De-Sire 170BPM Single: 1 5 8 9 x Double: 5 8 9 x The latest in a set of remixes of a song that has been around since 1st mix, this song starts with AN ANNOYING WHINING HIGH PITCHED SOUND. Then it kicks off into an actual song. Samples its and pieces (not directly the steps, but ideas) from multiple Trip Machines. Not freeze heavy, but well rounded. If you are adept at all the Trip Machine songs, then this should be no problem for you. Vanity Angel - Fixx 140BPM Single: 1 3 6 8 x Double: 3 5 8 x A fairly good song, VERY freeze and gallop heavy. Quite a few syncopated patterns not unlike Tears, but much easier. A midsong break from the harder notes yields a short gallop chain. Fairly straightforward. We Are the Champions (Factory Team Remix) - Live 2 Love 136BPM Single: 1 3 5 7 x Double: 3 5 7 x A remix of a Queen song from 1977, this newer version of a classic... SUCKS. Straight up, it sucks. I think it is an injustice to Freddie Mercury, but that's just me. The steps... they could DEFINITELY be better, but a few offbeats give it its color. We Will Rock You - House Boyz 90BPM Single: 1 3 5 7 x Double: 3 5 7 x Another remix from Queen, this one sounds a little better. Short 1/16th note runs give slight problems with the song, but overall, this song is most laden with jumps. Slow and easy, no problems at all. Hearing the song, it sounds like a darker, more evil version of MAX300. It DEFINITELY lives up to that title, with multiple fast 1/8th note runs, many fast jump combinations, and a LOT of freeze arrows. Many consider this to be harder than PARANOiA Survivor and Legend of Max, though that's a judgment call. First described as "Drop Out on crack", this song was the fastest song that the game had seen to this point. Many fast tricky 1/8th note runs make this one of the hardest songs in the game, though it is the easiest of the "speed 10s". Miracle 1 2 5 7 - 2 5 8 - My Sweet Darlin' 1 3 4 8 - 4 5 8 - Nori Nori Nori 1 3 5 7 - 3 5 8 - Ordinary World 1 1 4 7 - 4 5 7 - So Deep (Perfect Sphere Remix) - 140BPM Single: 1 3 5 9 x Double: 2 6 9 x So Deep is definitely one of the most difficult songs on DDRMAX. The entire song is composed of fast 1/16th notes and gallops. When MAX first came out, this song was considered to be harder than MAX300. THIS MODE IS DIFFICULT! Nonstop: Explanation and Course List Nonstop mode is a special mode first introduced in 3rd mix. It consists of four songs back to back with no break between them. You may choose modifiers for the course. You have one lifebar that will fill and drop over the course of the songs. There are two difficulties available for Nonstop: Normal and Difficult. The Nonstops are listed with the Difficult ranking song difficulties. If played on Normal difficulty, go down one difficulty on each song (if the song is Heavy, then it goes down to Standard, and from Standard to Light). For IR users: You will only get an IR code if you complete the nonstop. Name: Pop 4 - This course is the only Nonstop course that puts you on the high score list that is saved on the machine. Irresistiblement [S] Cartoon Heroes (Speedy Mix) [S] I'm gonna get you! [H] I Do I Do I Do [H] Name: Dancemania - songs are from the Dancemania series Butterfly [S] Sky High [S] If You Were Here [H] Dam Dariram [H] Name: Macho - umm... I don't feel macho playing this, but I guess someone does. We Will Rock You [H] Telephone Operator [H] Crash! [H] Captain Jack (Grandale Remix) [H] Name: House - I guess these are supposed to be House music... but I don't see it. The classics that all of us old school DDR players remember playing nonstop back in the day. Butterfly [S] Lets Get Down [S] Little ***** [S] PARANOiA [S] Name: Fine Choice - it's not that fine of a choice if you ask me, but this is a fun nonstop. I'm In The Mood For Dancing [H] Happy Wedding [H] Senorita (Speedy Mix) [H] Destiny Lovers [H] Name: Hop Step - these names are getting even more ludicrous, aren't they? This one is fun too, but somewhat difficult. Candy* (MAX version) [H] Twin Bee (Generation X) [H] Witch Doctor (Giant Toons Mix) [H] 321 Stars [H] Name: From Dance Maniax - ok, back to a normal name... songs from the Dance Maniax series. Mobo Moga [H] Stay (Organic House mix) [H] Kiss Kiss Kiss [H] Haven is a 57 Metallic Gray [H] Name: Four Seasons - OK, this KINDA works... But I don't see how Firefly would be autumn... Miracle Moon [H] air [H] Be Lovin [H] 321 Stars [H] Name: Eurobeat - these songs are definitely Eurobeat genre (except Hyper Eurobeat, which is neither Hyper nor Eurobeat). Oni difficulty is inserted for MAX2 Oni remixes only. Players Best 1-4 [H] Players Best 5-8 [H] Players Best 9-12 [H] Players Best 13-16 [H] Players Best 17-20 [H] Player's Worst [H] Name: Random Dancemania - I'm not sure on the criteria, but it will pull 4 songs at random from the Dancemania series and slap them together. This nonstop does NOT list the song choices before you play, however, songs CAN be on the Oni difficulty, such as A, V, or Paranoia Survivor MAX, as well as MAX2 Oni remixes. [H] Name: Random Bemani - Pulls 4 songs from the Bemani series. Also does not list songs before play, and allows Oni. [H] Name: Random All - Pulls 4 songs. Any 4 songs. You could get Legend Road, or Road of Gay. You never know. Does not list songs, and allows Oni. [H] Name: Random Caprice - I'm also not sure on the criteria, but this seems to be the same as Random All, but it shows the song choices before play. Allows Oni difficulty. [H] +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ VIII. D-D-D-D-DANCE! Oni: Explanation and Course List Challenge mode (also called Oni mode) is a mode first introduced in DDRMAX2. This mode is somewhat like Nonstop mode, with a few interesting twists. First, all Oni courses are at least 5 songs long. The lifebar is replaced by a battery with 3 segments. If during the course of any one song, you attain a Good, Boo, Miss, or an NG on a step, you will lose one piece of the battery. Losing all pieces of the battery spells failure. Upon completion of a song, you will receive pieces of the battery back based on the difficulty of the upcoming song. 8 footers and below give one piece back, 9 footers give two, and 10 footers and above give all of your battery back. IR players: You will receive an IR code if you complete the course or not. It also shows your time into the course and number of songs cleared. Individual songs in the courses are listed as: Song Name - Difficulty Setting, Single Difficulty / Double Difficulty Neo Naoki Standard - a collection of Naoki songs 1) Aoi Shoudou (for EXTREME) - Standard, 5/5 2) Hyper Eurobeat - Standard, 4/6 3) Brilliant 2U (Orchestra Groove) - Heavy, 7/7 4) Memories - Heavy, 8/8 5) Burnin' the Floor - Heavy, 8/8 Dancemania Oni - all songs from the Dancemania series 1) Get Up'n Move - Heavy, 8/7 2) I Believe in Miracles - Heavy, 8/8 3) Captain Jack - Heavy, 9/9 4) Synchronize Love - Heavy, 8/8 5) Rhythm and Police - Heavy, 9/9 6) Butterfly - Oni, 8/8 Paranoia Bros (Extreme) - A new Paranoia collection 1) Paranoia 180 - Heavy, 8/9 2) Paranoia Evolution - Heavy, 9/9 3) Paranoia Survivor - Heavy, 10/10 4) Paranoia Max (Dirty Mix) - Heavy, 8/9 5) Paranoia Survivor Max - Heavy, 10+, 10+ Trip Five - same concept as Paranoia Brothers, now with Trip Machines! 1) Trip Machine - Heavy, 8/8 2) SP-Trip Machine Jungle Mix - Heavy, 8/8 3) Trip Machine Luv Mix - Heavy, 8/9 4) Trip Machine Climax - Heavy, 9/9 5) Trip Machine Survivor - Heavy, 9/9 Classic - All classical songs that were remixed for use in DDR. 1) End of the Century - Heavy, 9/9 2) Speed Over Beethoven - Heavy, 8/9 3) Saints Go Marching In - Heavy, 9/8 4) V - Heavy, 8/8 5) Kakumei - Heavy, 9/9 2MB - All songs by the artist 2MB (Naoki Maeda) 1) Paranoia KCET Clean Mix - Heavy, 9/9 2) Trip Machine (luv mix) - Heavy, 8/9 3) La Senorita Virtual - Heavy, 8/8 4) Orion.78 (Civilization Mix) - Heavy, 9/9 5) Healing Vision (Angelic Mix) - Heavy, 9/9 World Tour - the longest Oni on Extreme, takes you for a trip :-D 1) Living In America - Heavy, 7/8 2) La Bamba - Heavy, 8/8 3) La Copa De La Vida - Heavy, 7/7 4) Moba Moga - Heavy, 7/7 5) Afronova - Heavy, 9/9 6) Jane Jana - Heavy, 7/7 7) Gamelan de Couple - Heavy, 8/9 8) Orion.78 (AM Euro Mix) - Heavy, 9/7 9) Matsuri Japan - Heavy, 9/8 Trick - Umm... it's just what it says it is, a trick. Frequently Asked Questions Q: What is a freeze arrow? A: A freeze arrow (first introduced in DDRMAX 6th mix) is a special type of arrow that you have to hold down when you step on it. Freeze arrows are green in color, and in order to complete them correctly, you must hit the arrow at the beginning of the freeze arrow and leave that arrow depressed until the entire arrow has disappeared into the base arrow castings, at which time you will see "O.K!" under the arrow, signifying that you completed it correctly. If you let go of a freeze arrow early (called 'breaking a freeze') the arrow will turn black, and you will see "NG" under the freeze arrow, signifying that you did not complete the freeze arrow properly. Q: How does the scoring system on Extreme work? A: First, the easy way of explaining it. Every song has a certain amount of Dance Points, based on the number of steps in the song. Getting all Perfects and all OKs on a song nets you the highest grade of AAA, with 100% dance points. From there, the stats go as follows: 93 % - AA 80 % - A 65 % - B 45 % - C Less than 45% - D Now... the hard explanation, taken from http://aaroninjapan.com/ddr2.html. A single step's points are calculated as follows: Let p = score multiplier (Perfect = 10, Great = 5, other = 0) N = total number of steps and freeze steps (jumps count as 1 step) n = number of the current step or freeze step (varies from 1 to N) B = Base value of the song (1,000,000 X the number of feet difficulty) - All edit data is rated as 5 feet So, the score for one step is: one_step_score = p * (B/S) * n Where S = The sum of all integers from 1 to N (the total number of steps/freeze steps) *Remember* : Double steps (U+L, D+R, etc.) count as two steps instead of one *for your combo count only*, so if you get a double L+R on the 112th step of a song, you score is calculated for only one step, not two, as the combo counter might otherwise imply. Now, through simple algebraic manipulation S = 1+...+N = (1+N)*N/2 (1 through N added together) Each song has a certain number of "Dance Points" assigned to it. For regular arrows, this is 2 per arrow. For freeze arrows, it is 6 per arrow. When you add this all up, you get the maximum number of possible "Dance Points". Your "Dance Points" are calculated as follows: A "Perfect" is worth 2 points A "Great" is worth 1 points A "Good" is worth 0 points A "Boo" will subtract 4 points A "Miss" will subtract 8 points An "OK" (Successful Freeze step) will add 6 points A "NG" (Unsuccessful Freeze step) is worth 0 points Based on the percentage of your total "Dance Points" to the maximum possible number, the following rank is assigned: 100% - AAA 93 % - AA 80 % - A 65 % - B 45 % - C Less - D Fail - E WHEW. Q: How does the scoring system for Nonstop work? A: The first song in a Nonstop is worth 10 million points total. It could be Be In My Paradise light, it could be PARANOiA Survivor Max challenge, it would still be worth 10 million. Song 2 is worth 20 million, song 3, 30 million, and song 4 is worth 40 million. A total of 100 million points possible for the nonstop. There's an added twist: There's a step higher than a perfect that is added, called a Marvelous. If 100% Marvelouses are scored, then you are awarded the full points for the song. Here's the more technical stuff: A single step's points are calculated as follows: Let p = score multiplier (Marvelous = 10, Perfect = 9, Great = 5, other = 0) N = total number of steps and freeze steps (jumps count as 1) n = number of the current step or freeze step (varies from 1 to N) B = Base value of the song (1,000,000 X stage number [one of 1,2,3,4]) So, the score for one step is: one_step_score = p * (B/S) * n Where S = The sum of all integers from 1 to N (the total number of steps/freeze steps) Q: How does the scoring in Oni mode work? A: This one is fairly easy. While playing, the normal score display disappears, and is replaced by a Dance Points gauge. Depending on the judgment of your step, you get a certain number of dance points for each step. Marvelous - 3 Perfect - 2 Great - 1 Completed Freeze arrow (OK) - 3 All others - 0 Upon completion of the Oni, you see your total Dance Points displayed. Q: What is "Extra Stage"? A: When playing in normal play, if you receive a grade of AA or higher on your final stage on Heavy difficulty, there will be a fast wipe at the end of the song, and you will see the words "TRY EXTRA STAGE!". The modifiers for Extra Stage are prechosen, and cannot be changed: 1.5 arrow speed, reverse scroll, Heavy difficulty. There is a hidden mod on called Power Drop. Your life bar starts full, and does not come back up. You can choose any song to play on Extra Stage. The preferred song (due to the fact that it once was only playable as extra stage) is Legend of Max. If you manage to complete The Legend of Max on Extra Stage with a grade of AA or higher, you will unlock the OMES, or OneMoreExtra Stage (not a typo, that's what it looks like on the machine). The OneMoreExtra stage is Dance Dance Revolution challenge, with the modifiers of 3x arrow speed, reverse scroll, Sudden Death (any step that would break combo fails you). After that... you get some nice extra credits, with a different version of Graduation playing in the background. As a dear friend once said after I complained about this song after first hearing it: "WTF Graduation ownz you for FREE." Q: Is there a cheat code for DDR Extreme? A: Nope. Although... there is one code that you do need to remember. It's an unlock code for Extreme. It unlocks items 1-30 on the Unlock screen (everything). Here is an explanation of how to do this... NOTE: If this is not your machine, you may need the assistance of an arcade technician to access the menus. Explained in detail, thanks to GPF Lith of ddrseattle.com: 1. Open the cabinet, and put the machine into TEST MODE. 2. Place the cursor on "GAME OPTIONS" but do not press the Start button yet. 3. Have someone step on and hold the 1P Down arrow (on the stage). 4. Press and hold the Service Button inside the cabinet. While holding both the button and the 1P down arrow on the stage, press the green 1P Start button on the outside of the cabinet. 5. The screen will now display the "SECRET" screen, with an item labeled "APPEND". NOTE: DO NOT choose the option to initialize. 6. Select "APPEND". The screen will now display the password input screen. 7. Enter the password: BWUVHBK - KVXFXYA. Use: 1P Left/Right buttons (on the cabinet) to move the cursor, 1P Start button (on the cabinet) to change the letter at the cursor, and 1P Start button while holding 1P Left/Right buttons to finish. 8. The screen will display either "REGISTRATION" or "PASSWORD ERROR", then return to the SECRET screen. The former means the items have been successfully unlocked. The latter is an error message displayed when an incorrect password has been entered; re-select "APPEND" and enter the correct password. 9. Select "EXIT" to return to the main TEST MODE screen. Q: My machine doesn't have the unlock code in, and I want to play PARANOiA Survivor Max. How do I accomplish this? A: PARANOiA Survivor Max is a unique song in the way that it can be unlocked during gameplay. First, determine the number of songs your machine is set to. This will affect your process for unlocking this song. Short version of the explanation: Play the old PARANOiA Brothers course backwards. Long version of the explanation: Go through the process until the machine reaches Final Stage. Start off by playing PARANOiA Rebirth on Heavy. Make sure to AA it. Then play PARANOiA Evolution Heavy, making sure to AA it as well. Then PARANOiA KCET (clean mix) heavy. Lastly, PARANOiA MAX (dirty mix). When you reach final stage, if you have AAed all of the songs you have played so far, you can play PARANOiA Survivor MAX on any difficulty except for Oni. Q: Well that's fine, but what about PARANOiA Survivor? A: PARANOiA Survivor is selectable on all difficulties, but only as your final stage. Q: How about Trip Machine Survivor? A: Trip Machine Survivor can be played either on the second to last or the last stages of your game. Q: OK, one more... Legend of Max. A: Legend of Max can be played as your Extra Stage. Q: Some of these songs are really hard... are they even possible? A: Every song in the game is feasibly passable. On Singles, I have personally attained a AA grade or higher on all of the songs on all difficulties. On Doubles, I have passed every song with at least a C. Every song is passable, and it is possible to attain a AAA on every song... just not very easy to do. Q: How do I pull off the oni glitch and what is it? A: The oni glitch allows you to play a course's songs with difficulties ported from an adjacent course. For example, Legendou (Legend Road) is HHHHC, but when overlaid with the difficulties from Naoki NeoStandard, it becomes SSHHH (Legendou Jr). 1. Highlight an adjacent course. You will use these difficulties. 2. Hit Left or Right, depending on the 'base' course you want to use. 3. Hit Start before the stack of songs builds back up. You will have succeeded if the "song stack" is still reading the previous course's first song when you hit start. Using my previous example, when you hit start to select Legendou, and the first (and only) song shown in the songlist window is Aoi Shoudou, you will be playing Legendou Jr. If the stack has built up (song #2 is visible below #1, which has raised), or the displayed song has changed, the glitch failed. Tips 'n Tricks: 1. Start out hitting L/R and then Start very quickly and slow down gradually until it registers. 2. Do not use this to bug courses that have MAX2 Remixes, unless you know what you are doing. Most (but not all) MAX2 remixes only have Challenge steps, and if put on Heavy, the machine will CRASH! resetting the credit count to zero. IIDX Boss -> Kidou II will work, because Drop Out Remix has Heavy steps, but trying to bug Trick will crash the machine. 3. Normal L-S-H songs that are put on Challenge will play Heavy, except for a few special cases such as Dam Dariram, but these can only be accessed through Nonstop Mode. 4. The glitch works on Nonstop Mode, but you may not enter the options menu- that will nullify the effect. 5. The glitch does NOT affect mods on a course in any way. A bugged RevenG II will still play Sakura on 0.5x on any difficulty, and bugging Naoki Premium with RevenG II will only make Dance Dance Revolution Challenge steps, but not 0.5x. Q: What's the deal with all this DDR lingo? A: DDR lingo, just like any other jargon in the real world, is merely a set of vocabulary meant to describe situations, and the like that are DDR specific. Here's a good start on it, although there's a LOT more than what's listed here... it all depends on your region and the players... our players have made up some of their own lingo as well. These are some widely used terms: Black flag - Getting all Perfects and one Great on a song Blue flag - Getting all Perfects and one Good on a song Pink (purple) flag - Getting all Perfects and one Boo on a song Red flag - Getting all Perfects and one Miss on a song Green flag - Getting all Perfects on a song, but breaking one freeze arrow, therefore (On Extreme) not allowing you to AAA it. True Black flag - Getting all Perfects until you get one Great on the last step of the song White flag - Getting a Great on the first step of a song, then getting all the rest of the steps Perfect. Noncombo steps - Goods, Boos, and Misses are all considered noncombo steps, because they will stop your Combo from growing (duh). Oni-pass - Getting less than 4 noncombo steps on a song, allowing you to pass that song in an Oni course. Bar Hugger - One who refuses to let go of the bar and puts all their weight on the bar behind them throughout the whole song. Also known as 'bar whore' and 'bar raper'. Catastrophic ('Cata' for short) - You'll occasionally hear players talking about they passed, FCed, or AAed a cata. In older mixes of DDR, there were names for all the difficulty ratings. 9 footers (the hardest in the game until DDRMAX brought MAX300, the first 10 footer) were called Catastrophic. Some others were Exorbitant (8 feet) and Paramount (7 feet). LFO - Left Foot Only. Playing a song with only your left foot. RFO - Right Foot Only. Playing a song with only your right foot. Basic, Trick, Maniac - In older mixes of DDR (notably 3rd, 4th, and 5th) the difficulties were Basic (Light), Trick (Standard), and Maniac (Heavy). On USA mix, there were different difficulties altogether: Standard (Light), Difficult (Standard), and Expert (Heavy). On some machines, Trick is also known as Another. On 3rd mix, to play Maniac, you had to unlock SSR mode, which would allow play on Maniac only. S4R - A common set of modifiers that people use, uses Sudden, Shuffle, and Flat together. S6R - Using Shuffle, Sudden, Solo, and a speed modifier together when playing a song. 6 option - Also known as 6-mod, this is the practice of combining 6 different modifiers together on one song. My personal favorite, and a good example: 1.5 Boost Hidden Shuffle Flat Reverse. Q: I have a question for the FAQ. How do I contact you?
