A product from Konami, the game has escalated into a franchise of 8 different mixes (not including the Pluses and Solos) and accumulated many fans. In October 2002, Bemani released Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) Extreme in Japan. Within days and months, arcades throughout the United State began housing at least one of these units. Until now, I figured that a FAQ would not be necessary. Up until now, when DDR Extreme reached number 10 in the top 10 most reviewed game FAQs, I figured to bring my expertise into the scene. Hopefully, I can give enough info to help the massive amount of DDR fans that need it. Thanks for at least reading this. ############################################################################### 2) How to Play ############################################################################### The DDR Extreme machine is a big really big machine. The screen occasionally shows how to play. If your too impatient, let me break it down. After entering the right amount of quarter/tokens, use the yellow arrow buttons to switch between choices and the green button to accept that choice. Now it’s time to pick how you want to play. Singles mode is the normal mode where one player plays one at a time. Couples mode is where two people play at the same time. Doubles mode is where one person plays using both sets of pads (I often play this mode). After selecting the mode you prefer to play, time to pick your skill level. More on that later. Now it’s time to pick the songs. After choosing a song, it’s time to dance. On the screen there will be a set of arrows that scroll upwards. In addition, there’s a set of gray arrow outlines on the top of the screen. Now, here’s the dancing part. In order to score points and stay alive, the person playing must step on the same arrow on the metal pad in unison when the colorful arrow aligns with its gray outline counterpart. There’s a health gauge on the top of the screen, when your doing bad they will be a warning sign popping up in the background telling you so. If your health gauge empties out, it’s game over. If you happen to endure the entire song, it’s time to choose another stage. Keep on repeating this process until you hit game over or you finished your final stage. ############################################################################### 3a) Normal Game Modes ############################################################################### There will be 6 skill modes to choose from: Beginner, Light, Standard, Heavy, Nonstop, and Oni. Nonstop and Oni modes are cleverly hidden and will be unveiled in the next part of my FAQ. This leaves Beginner, Light, Standard, and Heavy Modes to be dealt with. Beginner is the starting block of all the new DDR players. In this mode, there will be a character dancing on screen on a metal pad just like you! When it’s the right time to step on an arrow, the character on the screen steps on it whether if stepped on the right arrow at the right time or not. It’s wise to notice the character and the arrows at the same time to understand the flow of the song. One cooler thing about Beginner Mode is the fact that you can’t fail on your first stage. In Light, Standard, and Heavy Modes, The dancing character is removed and replaced with colorful backgrounds and your responsible to pass the song on all stages to if you don’t want to fail causing a game over. Light Mode is a bit harder than Beginner Mode. Standard Mode is a bit harder than Light Mode. Finally, Heavy Mode is harder than Standard Mode. So basically, it’s like this below: Hardest Easiest Heavy > Standard > Light > Beginner ############################################################################### 3b) Nonstop Game Mode ############################################################################### Are you sure you can handle this? Really? All right then. To unlock Nonstop Mode, go to the skill mode screen and highlight (DON’T SELECT!) heavy mode. With that highlighted, press the yellow right button and there you have it, Nonstop Mode. In this special mode there are a set of songs that have already been pre-determined by Bemani and the people who played the game. For a list of those songs, please scroll down to Section 7: Nonstop Mode Song List. Now what makes this mode so interesting is the fact that it’s not like the normal modes. In this mode the player must play that list of songs without an intermission. That means, when your done with the first song, your forced to play the second songs without any rest in between. One must have great stamina to play this mode. If your good enough, your might be good enough to be posted on the high score screen found on the machine when there’s no one playing. ############################################################################### 3c) Oni Game Mode ############################################################################### What’s an Oni? Oni is Japanese for Devil, and its so fitting this mode is called Oni mode, since the difficulty is nowhere compared to normal gameplay mode. To enter this mode please follow the steps to unlock Nonstop Mode. Once you’ve found Nonstop Mode, you might notice Oni Mode to the right. Oni mode is the hardest mode in this machine by far. Once again, there will be a list of preset songs by Bemani to tick us off. If you notice some of them have more than 4 so more stamina will be needed to play this mode. “So what’s so hard about this thing besides more songs to play nonstop?” a new DDR player might say. To play this game, one must understand the gauge used in this mode. In this mode there will be a battery gauge instead of the normal spirally one. If you step on the pad and get a Miss/Boo/Good you break your combo and you lose a piece of your battery. If you screw up four times in one song it’s game over. If you happen to pass the song you are awarded with extra pieces based on the songs foot rating. If the song is 1-4 feet, you will receive one piece of battery. 5-7 feet nets you up to two pieces. 8-10 will fill your battery no matter how much you’re missing. ############################################################################### 4) Choosing a Song ############################################################################### Choosing a song is crucial to understand. It makes a world of difference if you’re going to waste your tokens or have a great time with this machine. First thing you might notice besides the songs to the right is the Groove Radar. The following clearly defines what each category means: Air: The amount of steps that involves stepping on two different arrows within a song Stream: How long and often a stream of arrows flow throughout the song in an organized pattern Chaos: How long and often streams of arrows flow throughout the song in an unorganized and random patterns Freeze: The amount of green freeze arrows that shows up through out the song. Voltage: The peak of the song that shows the most amount of arrows in one screenshot. Speed is a factor. Aside from the groove radar, there are other things to look out for. The Foot Ratings are back for the 7th out of 8 times throughout the series. Basically it depicts the overall difficulty of songs by showing an amount of feet in the small box. The easiest songs are represented with a score of 1 foot, while the hardest songs are depicted with a 10 feet rating. Something that Devil0n wanted me to mention is the fact that the songs “Legend of Max” on heavy and “Paranoia Survivor Max” on heavy and oni have a flashing 10-foot rating. I’m guessing that they are harder than “Max 300” and “Maxx Unlimited”. One more factor in choosing a song is the tempo shown above the cool song picture. (The picture thingy next to the rotating Songlist) Each song’s speed is shown by its tempo. Obviously, the higher the tempo the faster the song (your music teacher should of taught you that) will be played. Now if there is a particular song you want to find, there are several ways to organize the song listings. If you can’t find it in the default list press both of the yellow arrows for another way to organize the songs. In other this is how pressing the yellow buttons go: default, the Bemani game the song first appeared in, ABC order by the song name, BPM/Tempo order, in order of the top 50 (I think) most played songs, then finally to the default list once again. If you don’t give a care of what song to pick, you can pick Roulette and/or Random. Random, randomly selects the song without you to know the song until playtime. Most of the time it’s inconvenient. Roulette spins the Songlist round and round really fast. Press the green button to stop the spinning. The song list will slowly stop and the song in the song select box is the one that you’re going to play. Time to set your stuff. ############################################################################### 5) Song Modifiers ############################################################################### Now let’s choose the song. Just press the green button to play the song. HOLD THE PHONE! You might want to change the gameplay of the game using some song modifiers. To activate this nifty feature, hold the green button immediately after choosing the song. If the “code” is done right, a list of ways to change the way to play the song is presented. Here’s the breakdown on the stuff. Speed Mods (1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x, 5x, and 8x): This helps space out the arrows if they happen to be to close to tell (like BAG). Know the arrows will still hit the gray outline at the same time even without the speed mods. Boost: This affects the way your arrows scrolls. It starts out slow then around the 1/5th mark, it scrolls up faster. It’s really handy for songs like So Deep. On: Turns boost on Off: Turns boost off Appearance (Visible, Hidden, Sudden, and Stealth): This affects the way the arrows can be seen. Visible: The arrows can be seen normally Hidden: The arrows loses visibility around 2/3 of the way up screen. You better have some really good short-term memory to play this. Sudden: It’s the exact opposite of Hidden Mode. The arrows are hidden until 2/3 up the screen. You got to have some quick toes to play this. Stealth: The arrows will not show up completely so you better have the song memorized like your phone-number. Turn (Off, Left, Right, Mirror, and Shuffle): You want to reorganize the direction of the arrows? This is where you can do that. By the way, you can’t choose left and right in doubles mode. Off: This is the default step pattern Left: The steps will rotate to the left Right: The steps will rotate to the right Mirror: The steps are completely opposite of the default step patterns. Shuffle: The machine will choose one out of 8 random step charts to dance to. Other (Off, Little, Flat, Solo, Dark): These are some other ways to affect the game. Off: Leaves the steps be. Little: It takes out all of the arrows except the 1/4 arrow. (Learn some basic music knowledge if you don’t know what a 1/4 note is) Flat: The colors of the arrows are all the same no matter the type of note. Doesn’t apply to freeze arrows. Solo: Changes the colors of the arrows to what was used in the DDR Solo machines. 1/4 beat steps are red/orange. 1/8 beat steps are blue. 1/16 beat steps are purple. Dark: The gray outline will be taken away so you got to guess when to step at the right time. Scroll (Standard, Reverse): What to control the direction the arrows scroll? Standard: Arrows scroll from the bottom to top Reverse: Arrows scroll from the top to bottom Freeze (On, Off): Don’t like freeze arrows? No problem. On: Keep the green freeze arrows Off: Turns the freeze arrows into normal arrows Note: If you turn off the Freeze Arrows, then it’ll be impossible to nail a AAA since you HAVE to register a perfect on a FREEZE ARROW. (by Devil0n again!) Step (Beginner, Light, Standard, Heavy, Oni): Want to change the difficulty of the steps? Beginner, Light, Standard, and Heavy: See Section 3a: Normal Game Modes Oni: This is not quite Oni mode, so don’t trip. This mode is a level more difficult (or sometimes a little easier) alternative to heavy mode. The reason it doesn’t show up in the skill select screen is the fact that some songs don’t have an Oni/Challenge mode. BTW, if you’re a doubles player like myself, I bet you have noticed that there’s no Beginner Mode to choose. ^_^ Time to Begin! ############################################################################### 6) Song List ############################################################################### First off before I begin to list the songs, I believe it would be vital if you can understand how I list them. I will be listing the songs in the following format: Song: Tempo: Artist: Game of Origin: Mode Beginner Light Standard Heavy Oni Singles x x x x x Doubles x x x x x Song Info (difficulty/mode) Here’s a quick glossary of some terms I’ll be using to describe a step pattern (in no order, since I’m lazy to put them in ABC order). Short stream – 3 to 5 single arrows consisting of adjacent 1/4 and 1/8 arrows Long stream – multiple single arrows consisting of adjacent 1/4 and 1/8 arrows Pivot stream – a stream of single arrows with a common arrow every other arrow where a single foot is designated to that common arrow while the other foot steps on the other arrows Complex pivot stream – a stream of arrows that requires a pivot stream going into another pivot stream with a different common arrow Gallop – 2 arrows involving a 1/16 arrow followed by either a 1/4 or 1/8 arrow. It’s named a gallop since the easiest way to conquer this technique is to gallop like a cowboy. Run – it’s like a stream with 1/16 arrows sandwiched in between the adjacent 1/4 and 1/8 arrows Jump – a step that requires 2 arrows to be pressed a time Freeze – a step that requires a arrow or jump to be held during the duration of that arrow for it to count completely Now I will progress down the song list via the Default song list. The arrows tend to creep really slowly up the screen which can be a burden to the veteran players how love their music fast. I’m not sure if I can call the stream of arrows a real “stream” since I’ve seen salted snails move quicker than that. Anyways, there’s a stream of arrows in the beginning when the guitar is most noticeable. About 30 seconds into the song the vocal kicks in so the arrows will now be aligned with the words. This song shouldn’t be hard at all. The arrows mostly follow the rhythmic background that’s really hard to listen too since the vocals overshadows it greatly. The arrows go really slow so the very few streams are rather slow. You can say it’s a blend of old and new skool techno aided with a few robotic voices. Either way, it’s still a classic dating back to the second mix. In the beginning you notice that the down arrow appears every other time. It helps to keep one foot there and let the other one step out all the other arrows that appear. I kind of call this technique a pivot stream because you pivot on one foot as your second foot goes around the pad. Anyways after the opening stream, it’s clear sailing. Just be weary of the 1/8 arrows to jump and the gallops and you should do just fine. All it is, is a bunch of gallops or a run ending with a gallop. Plus it’s slow so there’s no need to break a sweat with this one. I do wish that the piano parts get remixed in the future. Anyways, it’s sort of like a disco hit with the words, “Celebrate” uttered out occasionally. The arrows first follows the music until the vocals kicks in. Once the vocals fade then the music controls the arrows. It’s a never ending cycle until the song ends. The song is filled with slow pivot streams so nothing that most vets would get worried about. Taka adds a piano background as the alien-like synth track plays over giving it the deep space feeling. The song also blends in a short stream, gallops, a long stream, and those annoying multi-step (AKA: those long streams of arrows on a single panel). This is a great track to get used to a verity of step patterns in a single track. Song: Burnin’ Heat! (3rd Options Mix) Tempo: 166 BPM Artist: Mr. T ft/ Motoaki F. So basically, I didn’t write this stuff. However, I did number the songs to signify, well the song order. ^_^ OK, there are two difficulties available for Nonstop: Normal and Difficult. The Nonstop Courses are listed with the Difficult ranking song difficulties. If played on normal difficulty, go down one difficulty on each song (if the song is Heavy, then it goes down to Standard, and from Standard to Light). For IR users: You will only get an IR code if you complete the nonstop. Modifiers are allowed for nonstop courses. With the help of Devil0n (again) here’s a quit description on how to enter the code into the DDR Extreme machine: 1. Open the cabinet, and put the machine into TEST MODE. 2. Place the cursor on "GAME OPTIONS" but do not press the Start button yet. 3. Have someone step on and hold the 1P Down arrow (on the stage). 4. Press and hold the Service Button inside the cabinet. While holding both the button and the 1P down arrow on the stage, press the green 1P Start button on the outside of the cabinet. 5. The screen will now display the "SECRET" screen, with an item labeled "APPEND". 6. Select "APPEND". The screen will now display the password input screen. 7. Enter the desired password. Use: 1P Left/Right buttons (on the cabinet) to move the cursor, 1P Start button (on the cabinet) to change the letter at the cursor, and 1P Start button while holding 1P Left/Right buttons to finish. 8. The screen will display either "REGISTRATION" or "PASSWORD ERROR", then return to the SECRET screen. The former means the items have been successfully unlocked. The latter is an error message displayed when an incorrect password has been entered; re-select "APPEND" and enter the correct password. 9. Select "EXIT" to return to the main TEST MODE screen. Note: Do NOT select “initialize!” -Oni Glitch- (contributed by Devil0n) How do I pull off the oni glitch and what is it? The oni glitch allows you to play a course's songs with difficulties ported from an adjacent course. For example, Legendou (Legend Road) is HHHHC, but when overlaid with the difficulties from Naoki NeoStandard, it becomes SSHHH (Legendou Jr). 1. Highlight an adjacent course. You will use these difficulties. 2. Hit Left or Right, depending on the 'base' course you want to use. 3. Hit Start before the stack of songs builds back up. You will have succeeded if the "song stack" is still reading the previous course's first song when you hit start. Using my previous example, when you hit start to select Legendou, and the first (and only) song shown in the songlist window is Aoi Shoudou, you will be playing Legendou Jr. If the stack has built up (song #2 is visible below #1, which has raised), or the displayed song has changed, the glitch failed. -Solo Mode Glitch- (contributed by Chris Kam) This one is really simple. When you’re playing with a friend in Versus Mode and one person chooses to play with a Solo Modifier (explained in the Song Modifier section) and the other did not, both players will play the song in Solo Mode. ############################################################################### 10) FAQ ############################################################################### Q: What’s a freeze arrow? A: A freeze arrow is a special arrow introduced in DDR Max (6th mix). The arrow is bright green and it’s width is thicker that normal arrows. To successfully perform a freeze arrow, the player must keep his or her foot on the arrow until the big green freeze arrow is no more. Q: How can you play doubles? A: To play doubles, the player must enter 2 credits worth of token/quarter and press both green buttons. If successful there will be two play modes to choose from. Just press the right yellow button on this screen to highlight doubles. After doing so press the green button and the announcer will say, “Doubles player.” Remember that your playing with both pads now. Q: Where can I find a cheat code for DDR Extreme? A: Check the new cheat section. Q: Can I still play after finishing my Final Stage? A: Yes, you can! On your final stage make sure you can get a AA or a AAA rating at the end of the song on heavy. If you achieve that, you can pick any song you want but you can’t change the song modifiers. The song modifiers will be stuck with 1.5x speed, Reverse Scrolling, Pressure Gauge (the health gauge can go down but cannot go up) and will be set on Heavy. If you happen to AA or AAA that while playing “The Legend Of Max”, it’s time to play one more extra stage! This time, you’re faced with the song “Dance Dance Revolution” by the DDR All Stars. Once again, you can’t change the song modifications. The settings are now 3x speed, Reverse scroll, Sudden Death (If you brake your combo, Game Over!), and the song will be played in Oni/Challenge Mode. If you happen to AA or AAA this...to bad that’s all. Q: I found something that you don’t have, how can I send that information to you? A: That will be explained in Section 11: Contact Me. (or you can just shut up Devil0n!) Q: I found someone using your FAQ, what should I do? A: First off, E-mail or AIM me the link to the website. You will be recognized if you happen to come across a site stealing my stuff. Q: What is that censored word after “Little”? A: Well it’s 5 letters long and you hear it a lot in dog shows. Figure it out yourself. By the way, they do say that word at the end of the song once. Q: Where’s the Beatmania III, Keyboard Mania, Pop’n Music, etc... songs at on the game list? A: All the songs in those games are in the default list. I didn’t bother putting them up twice. Q: What are the qualifications to play Paranoia Survivor Max? A: To play this song, you got to pass the following Paranoia songs on Heavy and with a AA or higher. Paranoia Survivor Max will appear as the final stage when you meet the following quota: 1st Stage: Pass Paranoia Evolution with a AA grade. 2nd Stage: Pass Paranoia Rebirth with a AA grade. 3rd Stage (if the machine is set to 4 songs): Pass Paranoia K-CET with a AA grade. 4th Stage (if the machine is set to 5 songs): Pass Paranoia Max with a AA grade. Final Stage: If you’ve done this correctly, Paranoia Survivor Max is playable on Beginner, Light, Standard, and Heavy modes. Q: Is DDR Extreme the last DDR to be made? A: I have my own doubts to this rumor since there is no clear info from Bemani or Konami. Until there is an announcement concerning this matter, don’t trip. Q: When is there going to be a PS2 release of Extreme? A: I expect a release around the fall of 2004. Q: What’s Joint Premium? A: Joint Premium is an option that the arcade employees can switch on. Basically, you can put in one credit in tokens and play versus or doubles. To tell whether the option is on, wait during the mode select screen. If you hear something about pressing the other side for a free credit, then it’s on. Q: I don’t understand some people online! What’s with all these flag stuff?!?! A: It’s just standard lingo to describe certain scenarios. Once again, Devil0n has hooked me up with a list. BTW, check out DDRfreaks.com for more! Black flag - Getting all Perfects and one Great on a song Blue flag - Getting all Perfects and one Good on a song Pink (purple) flag - Getting all Perfects and one Boo on a song Red flag - Getting all Perfects and one Miss on a song Green flag - Getting all Perfects on a song, but breaking one freeze arrow, therefore (On Extreme) not allowing you to AAA it. True Black flag - Getting all Perfects until you get one Great on the last step of the song White flag - Getting a Great on the first step of a song, then getting all the rest of the steps Perfect. Noncombo steps - Goods, Boos, and Misses are all considered noncombo steps, because they will stop your Combo from growing (duh). Oni-pass - Getting less than 4 noncombo steps on a song, allowing you to pass that song in Oni. Bar Hugger - One who refuses to let go of the bar and puts all their weight on the bar behind them throughout the whole song. Also known as 'bar whore' and 'bar raper'. Catastrophic ('Cata' for short) - You'll occasionally hear players talking about they passed, FCed, or AAed a cata. In older mixes of DDR, there were names for all the difficulty ratings. 9 footers (the hardest in the game until DDRMAX brought MAX300, the first 10 footer) were called Catastrophic. Some others were Exorbitant (8 feet) and Paramount (7 feet). LFO - Left Foot Only. Playing a song with only your left foot. RFO - Right Foot Only. Playing a song with only your right foot. Basic, Trick, Maniac - In older mixes of DDR (notably 3rd, 4th, and 5th) the difficulties were Basic (Light), Trick (Standard), and Maniac (Heavy). On USA mix, there were different difficulties altogether: Standard (Light), Difficult (Standard), and Expert (Heavy). On some machines, Trick is also known as Another. On 3rd mix, to play Maniac, you had to unlock SSR mode, which would allow play on Maniac only. S4R - A common set of modifiers that people use, uses Sudden, Shuffle, and Flat together. S6R - Using Shuffle, Sudden, Solo, and a speed modifier together when playing a song. 6 option - Also known as 6-mod, this is the practice of combining 6 different modifiers together on one song. Devil0n’s personal favorite, and a good example: 1.5 Boost Hidden Shuffle Flat Reverse. ############################################################################### 10) FAQ History and Version Updates ############################################################################### July 12, 2004: Version 1.2 - OMG, AN UPDATE!!! Yup. It’s already a month into my summer vacation and I’m bored without a single new game to play. So what I’ve decided is to add song info as in what is the song like difficulty and sound-wise. Maybe I can get this all done by this guide’s first birthday...most likely not. But who cares? So far, I’m doing the songs that on the home versions since I’m broke to go to the arcades right now. March 16, 2004: Version 1.16 - Well, this is a minor update people. I got a new contributor and added 20 more BPM to Sakura. I finally figured out that people actually reads this stuff. Well, that’s all, peace out! January 27, 2004: Version 1.15 - Happy New Years DDR fans! Another monthly update and another contributor to introduce. Meet Chris Kam, he contributed a glitch. Check it out. I also found out that the Joint Premium thing is an option rather than a glitch. So I placed the thing in the FAQ section. One more thing, new host people! My favorite Bemani site is finally excepting contributions so here’s mine. You guys can find another copy of this FAQ on Bemanistyle.com! That’s all people for this month. Peace out players! December 25, 2003: Version 1.10! - Merry Christmas people! For a gift, I (with the help of Devil0n) bring you another monthly update. Now the top it all off, I got a new host, ddrkc.com made by no other than Devil0n. Freakin’ Devil0n kicked my ass at updating my own FAQ! “A Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!” November 23, 2003: Version .95 - Here’s another monthly update by yours truly!
