What's the point of this FAQ? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Basically, I was bored and I didn't see an arcade FAQ. Also, I just wanted to throw in some suggestions for those who are struggling with DDR, and how I picked up the game. For further help, I'd recommend reading some of the other DDR FAQs from gamefaqs.com. Some tips on this FAQ may not work with you, but this is how I've found it to work with me, and some others of my friends. IMHO, it's best that you develop your own style to play this game. Eventually, you'll pick it up, but for now, try to learn the basics (it's pretty difficult to make yourself look good when all you do is fail songs ^_^). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 2. What the heck is "Dance Dance Revolution?" -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Dance Dance Revolution (aka DDR) is a unique dancing simulation game. It's made by the same company and development team who brought Beatmania and Guitar Freaks, Konami's Bemani team. The basic point is to "dance to the music." Easily said than done though. Most people rather call it a stepping game however (in my brother's words, step aerobics). If you think that you cannot dance to this game, look on the internet for some dancing clips. An pretty good dancing group located in Korea is called the A-Team, who does performances with DDR songs. You can also try to find C-Squad; located in Canada... Other teams in North America include Team Changoland (which IMHO are one of the craziest groups I've seen), DDR Club Elite, and some others (which I have yet to "research" about, since I'm too busy writing this FAQ! ^_^) 2a. Changes from 4th Mix There are some REALLY obvious changes, and then there are the not-so-obvious changes. -To start off, you'll notice there's NO intro to the game. Don't ask why, there just isn't. -Second, there is no new voice track for the announcer to say "Dance Dance Revolution 5th Mix!" -When you put your coins in and hit start, already, you'll notice the warning screen looks MUCH different. -Mode select It looks kinda like 4th Mix, where you select what kind of game you want to play right off the bat, single, versus, or double. However, what is taken out is the "Linkmode." This does NOT mean there is not Internet Ranking, high scoring, or Edit steps however. Please read scoring for the ranking information. -Then you'll pick a character. Thank goodness, it doesn't matter who you choose this time. But from what I heard, this does affect the shuffle steps that you get. Also, this affects the songlist order, I don't know why. -Song select When you pick a song, you'll notice some interesting changes. All 122 songs are listed straight up. First listed are the Append 5th Mix songs (the Beatmania bunch), then the regular 5th Mix songs, then the rest of the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th Mix songs. -Can't find the song you're looking for? Go to the tips and tricks section to find out how to alphabetize the songlist! -Game play Another MAJOR change you'll notice is the completely new gameplay interface screen. The arrow graphics have been smoothed out. -The characters in the background also have been smoothed out. -Then you'll notice that the "Dance Gauge" is different. It's no longer little bars, but more like a meter. -You'll also notice a new addition to the gameplay: Stop arrows! Basically, everything in the game just stops for a few seconds, then resumes. -The BIGGEST difference is that the backgrounds, arrows, and the characters ALL move at 60 FPS! That means everything runs VERY smoothly, and looks... well weird at first. -Grading After each song, you'll notice that the scoring changed again, same with grading. But after your last song, you'll get the IR code. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 3. How to play -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- The main point of the game: Hit the arrows at the right time. As long as you have at least one point in your Dance Gauge (the meter at the top of the screen), you will pass the level. If your gauge hits Zero (or you have no dance gauge points), game is over. Game is also over when you clear all the songs for the mode (but you won't be told "Game Over," unless you failed the last song). When you enter Game Mode, you choose which type of game mode you want to play: Single, Versus, or Double. If you want to play Nonstop or edit data, hit right on the panel arrow twice, then choose the game type. Note, you CANNOT change to Versus mode in the middle of a Single mode game. If you choose Solo mode, you choose from 4 Panel mode, 6 Panel Solo mode with a DDR Pad, or 6 Panel Solo mode with a standard controller. If you want to enter Linkmode, same as playing regular Game Mode, hit right on the panel arrow twice (or on the D-Pad). The arrows: How I'm going to refer to the arrows (to avoid further confusion)- Fixed arrows: The white set of arrows that don't move located at the top of the screen. They're always there. Scrolling arrows: The colored arrows that will scroll up from the bottom of the screen and tells you which direction you want to hit when they align with the fixed arrows. Panel/Pad arrows: The arrows on your dance pad, the ones you stomp on. If you've played the other DDRs, this version the same. The concept is the same. You will have a fixed set of arrows on the top of the screen. As music plays, colored scrolling arrows will go up towards the fixed arrows, and the point of the game is to hit the corresponding arrow on your dance pad when the scrolling arrow(s) is aligned to the fixed arrow(s). Sometimes you will be required to hit two arrows at the same time (read on about double-steps). This version of DDR has four arrows: Up, down, left, and right. Sometimes, you'll be thrown two arrows to hit at the same time (I call them double steps, or simultaneous steps). This usually intimidates lots of beginners, and most don't know what to hit. It really isn't that hard, just be prepared to jump to hit those arrows at the same time (that's what baffles me: most beginners don't expect to be jumping around at all when they play. To hit those simultaneous arrows, the only way to hit them is to jump (or even hop) on them. Once you get more advanced, there are many other ways you can do it... A little tip for those struggling to hit the arrows on time: Each song is in a 4/4 beat. Which means you can count with the beat of a song. Even though some songs may have irregular beats, you'll notice that the fixed arrows will flash every fourth beat. When you have to hit the arrows, it will be on the beat or on the flash. But you have to make sure you're not too hasty to hit the buttons. What I used to do is count outloud (whispering at most, not screaming, please you'll scare the rest of the arcade patrons ^_^) 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4,etc. and that way I can keep up with the beat. Bouncing with the beat works as well (may look ridiculous, but I've seen sillier looking things). So you can be thinking "1,2,3,step,step,2,step" etc. Basically, just keep a beat. Also, the steps are not as random as they seem. Once you get the rhythm of a song, you should be able to anticipate when the steps will come out. What you have to start worrying about is when you move up in difficulty levels, especially when you don't play beginner mode, or without little mode. You'll be treated to the green/blue "offbeat" arrows (also known as 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 steps). Those are a bit more difficult to hit since they don't align with the fixed arrows on the beat or the flash, but when the fixed arrows aren't flashing. Those take some practice to get used to. If you can, keep "little" mode on, otherwise, you'll be given these extra steps (unless of course you don't mind them). If it helps, the offbeat arrows are always a different color than normal arrows, depending on which offbeat arrow they are. Once you're comfortable with the arrows, you should turn Little mode off (as this mode is used more for beginners and certain performers). Double mode is the same from any previous DDR versions. Only one player plays, but that one player uses BOTH 1st player panels and 2nd player panels. This mode isn't recommended for beginners. Basically, you'll be playing with eight arrows rather than just four. 3a. Judging and scoring At the end of your song, the game will rate you according to how well you did on the song. You'll be given a run-down on how many "Perfect!" "Great!" "Good" "Boo!" and "Miss" rating you've gotten, how many steps you've comboed, your score, and an overall grade on your performance. Rating: On the top of the screen during gameplay, you'll have colored gauge. This is your Dance Gauge. In all mode, you'll start off with since Dance Gauge points. The point is to have at least one bar filled by the end of the song; once you run out of points on your Dance Gauge, the game is over. As you get more Perfect! and Great! ratings, it will slowly fill up. Every time you get an Almost or Boo rating, full bars will be taken away from you. A big factor that depends how many bars are taken away from you is based on what stage you're on. If you're on your first song, or 1st Stage, a Miss will not take as many bars away as a Miss on your Final Stage. Once your bar is empty, you cannot gain anymore, and the gauge will remain a red color. Everytime an arrow passes, you'll be judged on how accurately you stepped on the arrow. -If you've hit it dead on, you'll get Perfect! -If you hit it a bit off, you'll get Great! -If you hit it about 1/8 of a beat off, you'll get a Good, and your combo will be stopped, if you have one going. -If you hit it more than 1/8 of a beat off, you'll get Boo! and you'll lose a point or two on your dance gauge -If you miss completely, you'll get a Miss, and you'll lose a couple points in your Dance Gauge, depending on which "stage" you're on. Scoring: In general, the higher your rating (Perfect! or Great), the more points you earn, so get as many Perfect! ratings as you can get! If I'm correct, the scoring system is unique from any Mix out there. The higher your Dance Gauge, the more points you will get per rating. The lower your gauge, the lower amounts points you earn. Similar to 3rd Mix, but the difference is that your max score is NOT limited to 1000000. But the degree of points you earn is nowhere as ridiculously high as 1st-2nd Mix. If your gauge hits 0, you will no longer earn any more points, regardless of rating. I hear there's a crazy formula for how the scoring works, but I don't even want to try to figure it out. Your Internet Ranking code will appear after the last song in your OVERALL RATING screen. Stage Bonus: You'll get a larger stage bonus if: *You turn on a mode (flat, hidden, sudden, etc.) *You have a large combo, bigger the better *How many perfects you get *Which Mix your song came from, 5th Mix songs gets a much larger bonus than older Mix songs *If you don't repeat a song (i.e. If you play No Limit 3 times in a row, you won't get a 5th Mix bonus for it). Judgement: At the end of your song, you get a letter grade for your performance. The higher combos and higher scores you earn, the higher the grade. Also, it reflects how high of a combo you have ratio-wise to how high of a combo that is possible. For example, if song A is 210-combo maximum, and song B is 110-combo maximum, and you earn a 100-combo on both songs, you'll get a lower grade with song A, but a very high grade with song B. The highest rating is AAA. Your grade is also reflected by how much points you have on your dance gauge...usually. Grades are as follows: AAA-Perfect performance. No "Great!" allowed. VERY hard unless you have absolutely dead-on timing. AA-Only "Great!" and and high percentage of "Perfect!" A-Excellent, several mistakes, mostly "Perfect!" and "Great!" ratings, few misses, good combo ratio. B-Fairly decent, about 5%-10% misses/boos. C-Average. Low combo number, decent amount of dance gauge left. D-Horrible. VERY poor grading/score. E-Failed. Endings: Depending on what your overalll FINAL grade was, you may get two different endings. You'll get the "songlist" ending with Princess-Zukin and Johnny if your overall grade was LOWER than an "A." You'll get the "Song banner" ending with different music if your overall grade was an "A" or higher. 3b. Ranking They are arranged by the following criteria: Ranking A is if your average song difficulty of all your songs played was between 1-3 feet. Ranking B is if your average song difficulty of all your songs played was between 4-6 feet. Ranking C is if your average song difficulty of all your songs played was between 7-9 feet. There's 5 score spots for each ranking and separate from Single and Double scores, making it 10 total score spots per ranking. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 4. Modes of play -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- When you start the game, your options will be: SINGLE GAME VERSUS GAME DOUBLE GAME A full VERSUS and/OR DOUBLE game REQUIRES two credits to be entered UNLESS an option called "Joint Premium" is turned on, in which only one credit is required (the option is OFF by default, and only the arcade operator can turn it on). SINGLE GAME: One player, one pad. VERSUS GAME: Two players, two pads, same set of arrows. Both players can choose different difficulties and mode settings. DOUBLE GAME: One player, two pads. The one player plays on all 8 panels instead of 4. Your character that you choose has no real effect on game difficulty or overall play. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 6. Frequently Asked Questions (Or questions you might ask...or maybe not) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Q. What's this with no intro? Is there a way to turn it on? A. No. Q. How come I can't choose a long version as my first song? A. If you have a standard 3-5 song machine, the Long versions will not appear until after your first song, and before your last song. Q. How come I got one less song after I played a long version song??? What a rip! A. Long versions take up 2 SONG SLOTS. It acts as two songs in one. Q. That sucks. A. So then don't play them. Q. What are those little green/yellow icons next to some of the songs titles? A. I haven't figured that out yet either. Q. Can I use link data with my memory card on the arcade machine? A. Yes. 4th/Extra Mix for PSX allow "Link data" to be saved on your PSX memory card, PROVIDED THE ARCADE CABINET HAS A MEMORY CARD SLOT MECH. You can find these above the coin door. If it's not there, then your arcade cabinet doesn't have one (it costs about $200 to get one installed). Q. How do I use EDIT DATA from my memory card for a song that I have EDIT STEPS for? A. In the song selection screen, go to the corresponding song that you have the edit steps for. Hit RIGHT on the PAD ARROW twice, it will show you what EDIT DATA is available for the song. Use the SELECT ARROW to select YOUR EDIT DATA, and hit start. If it's not there, then the memory card doesn't have the data. Q. What's "The SubS Mix" mean? A. The "SubStream" Mix. Q. What's the deal with BabyLon? A. Who knows? Cuteness factor I guess. Q. Is there a SOLO mode/option for 5th Mix? A. No SOLO steps or game was made for 5th Mix. Q. Do I have to have my feet on the arrow when a STOP occurs? A. No. These aren't "Freeze Arrows" (a la 6th Mix) Q. Can I change "Players' Best"? A. You can reset that through the options menu. Q. Where's event mode? A. I haven't found it either... Q. Your FAQ sucks. I can make a better one. A. Great. Then go make a better one. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 7. Can you give me some tips/secrets? -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Too many songs! How can I better organize this chaotic list? The original arrangement of the songlist is supposed to be arranged by difficulty. But in a list of 122 songs, trying to find that one song you want might be a bit difficult. During the song selection screen, on the side you're playing on, hold both the left and right select arrows and hit start (like the Game Option code from 2nd, 3rd, and USA Mix.). First time you do this will arrange the list alphabetically. Select a letter and hit start, and it'll roll down a menu of all the songs that start with that letter. NOTE THAT WHEN YOU ONLY HAVE 5 SECONDS LEFT, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CHANGE LETTERS! If your cursor is on the "L" menu, and the time hits 5, you'll ONLY be able to choose songs that start with the letter "L". Second time will arrange the list by BPM. Slowest song first, and on. Third time will arrange this list by "Players' Best," as in which song was scored highest. Repeat the code, and it'll go back to the original arrangement. *Changing colors* Little mode: This mode turns all OFFBEAT arrows OFF. During the song selection screen, press left, down, right on the pad arrows. You cannot mix Little and Flat together. Flat mode: This mode turns all arrows including offbeats the SAME COLOR, just like DDR 1st and 2nd Mix, and SSR Mode (Default). During the song selection screen, press left, down, right, left, down, right on the pad arrows. This will first turn on LITTLE, then FLAT. To turn off either code, keep hitting left, down, right until the icons go away. *Arrow flipping* Mirror mode: This will flip all arrows the opposite direction. During the song selection screen, press up, left, right, left, right on the pad arrows. Left mode: This will flip all arrows so the normal body orientation will be facing left. During the song selection screen, press up, down, right, left on the pad arrows. Right mode: This will flip all arrows so the normal body orientation will be facing right. During the song selection screen, press up, down, left, right on the pad arrows. Shuffle mode: This will swap arrows in different directions. During the song selection screen, press up, down, up, down, up, down on the pad arrows. To DISABLE any of these codes, just repeat the code until the icon is gone. *Disappearing/reappearing arrows* Hidden mode: This will make the arrows disappear halfway up the screen. During the song selection screen, press left, up, right on the pad arrows. Sudden mode: This will make the arrows appear halfway up the screen. After entering the HIDDEN MODE, repeat the code, left, up, right on the pad arrows. Stealth mode: This will make the arrows not show up at all. After entering the SUDDEN MODE, repeat the code, left, up, right on the pad arrows. To DISABLE any of these codes, just repeat the code until the icon is gone. *Freezing time* Konami got a little smart, realizing that it takes more than 20 seconds to scroll through the whole list of songs. So if you're really tired, and you need more than 20 seconds to rest, hold the left or right arrows, and let the game continually scroll through the songs. It'll give you another 20 or so seconds before it automatically forces the times to start anyway. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 9.
